 重庆简称"渝"重庆，古称巴，原本是一个古老的部落属地，其历史迄今已逾3000年。西汉时改称江州，隋、唐、五代、北宋时称渝州。北宋末期曾有短暂时期称恭州，至南宋光宗赵淳（淳为敦之误——译者注），先封恭王，后继帝位，所谓“双重喜庆”是也，于登基当年下诏书改恭州为重庆府。此后漫漫800余年，重庆辖境虽时有伸缩，然地名再无更易。
With a history of over 3,000 years, Chongqing was originally named Ba as the dwelling place of an ancient tribe. The place was called Jiangzhou during the Western Han Dynasty. Later on, its name was changed to Yuzhou during the Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties and Northern Song Dynasty, by the end of which it was renamed once more as Gongzhou for a short period of time. During Southern Song Dynasty Emperor Guangzong( Zhao Dun) was confered the title of Prince Gong in this place. He ascended the throne very soon then. For the sake of celebration, he renamed Gongzhou city as Chongqing ( Double Celebration) the year he became the emperor. This name remains all the same over eight hundred years, though the scope of this city sometimes had changed a little.
 重庆地处中国内陆之西南，属中亚热带季风气候，夏日阳光炙烈，故称“火炉”，城市依山而建，人谓“山城”，冬春雨轻雾重，又号“雾都”。1937年，抗日战争爆发，南京失陷，国民政府西迁重庆，又把这里定为“陪都”。由于第二次世界大战中重庆反法西斯战争中的重要地位，联合国总部那幅巨大的世界地图上，中国版图仅标出四座城市：北京，上海，南京，重庆。
Situated in the subtropical zone of Southwest China with a monsoon climate, Chongqing is hot and shimmering in summer, hence it has got the name“furnace city.” Meanwhile. Chongqing has also got the renown as a “ mountain city” because it is a city built on hillsides and mountains surrounding the city. The climate in Chongqing is often cloudy and misty in winter and spring. As a consequence. it is also called “ the fog city”. Since Nanjing had fallen after Anti-Japanese War broke out in 1937, Kuomintang government chose Chongqing as the“provisional capital” of China. For the key role it had played during World War II, Chongqing stands together with Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing as the only four cities marked on the China part of the huge world map in UN headquarter.
